Early Years

Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 to the Prime Minister of the Porbander State in British India, and a mother who was a devout Hindu. His parents were one of the main influences on his vegetarianism, fasting, and tolerance in different religions and races. He was married at 13 to a 14 year old girl "Ba".

He had four children and went to law school, but he was unhappy because he never wanted to be a lawyer.

Moving to England and South Africa

He became a vegetarian when he didn't like the food in England where he lived with his wife when he went to law school. Then he moved to Natal, South Africa for his work. Here he discovered the racism and hate that the Africans exhibited towards Indians. He experienced many instances where he was beaten for not following certain racist customs. These events caused Gandhi to question the relationship between his people and the British empire. In 1897Ghandi founded the Natal INdidan congress to support the Indians living in South Africa, he succeeded in winning them the right to vote.

In January 1897, Gandhi came back to Africa from a trip he took to India, and he was attacked by a white mob that tried to hang him. Gandhi did not press charges on any of the Members of the mob because he felt it was against his values and principals to seek revenge in a court.

Satyagraha: NON violent protest

In 1906 Gandhi led a non violent protest against the South African government where he asked his Indian "brothers" to stand up for their rights. This was asking the Indians to endure the punishments for their actions without fighting back.

The Zulu war in 1906 was a turning point for the Indians. The British wanted to use the INdian population in theri war without letting them be officers. Gandhi proposed that the indians would only run stretcher crews to treat wounded British soldiers. Ghandi said "If the government only realized what reserve force is being wasted, they would make use of it and give indians the opportunity of a thorough training for actual warfare."

India's Independence

December 31 1929 india raised its flag as an independent nation but it did not stick. Gandhis biggest struggle was Indian independance. Everything he did was eventually strengthening the Indian people and their culture.

Gandhi's Arrest

Gandhi was arrested for disturbing the peace and thousands or protestors came to protest his arrest outside jails and police stations, demanding he be released.

It was after this event that Gandhi became "bapu" or "father" to the nation.

The Salt March

When Britain imposed a salt tax on the Indian people Gandhi led thousands of people on a march that was a peaceful protest. the salt March was a journey of 248 miles from Amhedabad to Dandi where Gandhi was going to make salt himself. The governemnt reacted by jailing 60,000 people. They negotiated with Gandhi and the prisoners were realesed if he called off the Civil Disobedience act. Gandhi was jailed again and he went on a 6 day fast which eventaully caused the government grant rights to the "Untouchables"

WWII

Ghandi Opposed India entering the war because he felt that they were still fighting for their own liberties inside their country. Gandhi used the war to strengthen his fight for permanant Indian independence. Some opposed gandhi because they thought that refusing to fight against Hitler was "imorral" hundreds of "Freedom fighters" ran through the streets and mass violnce took place. Gandhi still stood strong that until india was granted immediate independence, it would not join the war efforts. All of this was happening while Gandhi was under arrest, he released however because of his failing health and the government did not want to anger the Indian people by letting Gandhi die in jail. At the end of the war the struggle ended with Gandhis approval.

Gandhi's Death

In 1934 there wer three unsuccessful attempts at killing Gandhi. He was assassinated however while walking on january 30th 1948 by Nathuram Godse, a radicalist hindu who blamed Gandhi for weakening India.
